125th Anniversary: A Celebration Across Continents - An unforgettable milestone marked with unity, pride and gratitude

Winona Chan (’13)

This year, Ying Wa Girls’ School reached a remarkable milestone – its 125th anniversary.  On Saturday, 29 March 2025, the school and the YWGSAA celebrated with grandeur in Hong Kong through a gala dinner attended by 1,500 alumnae, teachers and friends.  At the very same time, across continents, the YWGSAA UK-London Chapter hosted a gala lunch, allowing alumnae in the United Kingdom to share the joy of this historic occasion.

A special live moment: connecting with our Hong Kong event from London via video link

Thanks to live streaming, the London gathering was able to connect in real time with the celebration in Hong Kong.  It was truly moving to see both events linked together, as voices from across the globe joined in singing the school song.

One of the most memorable highlights of the Hong Kong dinner was the heartfelt performance by Mr Francis Kwan.  Despite recovering from a surgery and wearing an orthopaedic boot, he graced the stage with his signature warmth and dedication.  His presence, even under such challenging circumstances, was a powerful reminder of the love and loyalty he continues to show to our school community.  Many London alumnae were touched to witness this moment virtually, and his resilience left an indelible mark on the hearts of all present.

In London, the atmosphere was equally vibrant.  Alumnae of all generations gathered for the gala lunch, reconnecting with old friends and forging new bonds.  I had the privilege of serving as MC alongside my co-host, Victoria Chan (’10).  Together, we steered the afternoon’s programme, which included sharing stories, laughter and heartfelt reflections on what Ying Wa means to us.

Adding to the joy, the YWGSAA UK-London Chapter brought back souvenirs from Hong Kong.  The smiles on alumnae’s faces as they received these mementoes spoke volumes about the pride and affection we all feel for Ying Wa.  Beyond the tangible keepsakes, it was the sense of belonging and shared identity that truly made the day unforgettable.

None of this would have been possible without the tireless efforts of the YWGSAA UK-London Chapter committee.  Each member worked with dedication to ensure that the London celebration was worthy of such a significant milestone.  From logistics and planning to creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere, the event was a testament to teamwork and the strength of our alumnae community.

The UK-London Chapter committee presents a card to Mr Kwan, marking his retirement with heartfelt appreciation.

As we look back on this milestone anniversary, there is so much to be thankful for: the school that has shaped us, the teachers who have inspired us, and the lifelong friendships we continue to cherish.  The 125th anniversary is not only a celebration of Ying Wa’s history but also a reaffirmation of its enduring values and vision for the future.

Here’s to Ying Wa Girls’ School – 125 years strong, and many more to come.
