Michelle Tung (’22 S4)

The decision to study in Singapore was not made instantly.  I pondered, wondered, doubted my ability to survive in a completely new country on my own.  However, here I am, in Singapore, almost finishing my high school journey in a place which I call my second home.

Since I grew up in Hong Kong, I am lucky enough to be exposed to an international environment.  However, the dream of exploring the wider world and being involved in different cultures has been an aspiration in my life.  Thus, in 2022, I endeavoured to apply for a scholarship, the award of which enabled me to complete my two years of high school in the United World College of South East Asia (“UWCSEA”) in Singapore.  It was a hard time saying goodbye to my fellow classmates, teammates, teachers and family after being supported in Ying Wa for four years and walking through the COVID pandemic with everyone.  At the departure hall in the airport terminal, it was my first time realising that I was ACTUALLY going on this journey alone.

Arriving

With three suitcases, a backpack and a violin, I landed at the Changi Airport and was welcomed by orientation leaders.  With the redevelopment project in Ying Wa, I thought I had seen the prettiest campus.  However, in Singapore, I am still shocked by the size of my new school, and the four indoor air-conditioned sports halls neighbouring the boarding house that I lived in.  Luckily, the inevitable homesickness at first was soon eased by the heartfelt welcome from the orientation team and our house parents, who guided and led us in this new environment.

Transitioning

Living in the “Tampines House” (our residential building) with people from 50+ nationalities was exciting and overwhelming at the same time.  Having to speak English 24/7 and eating Indian curry, pasta and mashed potato was a challenge at first.  Thanks to the education and life-long friendships I gained at YWGS, I felt prepared and supported with frequent video calls from my old friends.  This foundation helped me adapt to the lifestyle and embrace the opportunity to celebrate our diverse cultures and differences.

As the days turned into weeks, what once seemed daunting became a source of strength.  The diversity that surrounded us enriched our perspectives.  In this melting pot of cultures in the UWCSEA, I found not only friends but also a deeper understanding of the world.  The experience taught me resilience, adaptability, and the beauty of stepping out of my comfort zone.  The transition was not always easy, but it was undoubtedly one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

Now!!

In May 2024, I graduated from the UWCSEA with memories of love, tears and unbreakable bonds.  This life changing journey not only changed my perspectives, but also opened doors to a world of possibilities.  Next, I will be heading off to Macalester College in the United States to study chemistry.  With the experiences earned and the values instilled, I have become a more open-minded, resilient and confident global citizen, who aspires to contribute to society and spread the love that I was so honoured to have received, as in the Ying Wa spirit of “To serve but not to be served”.
